It may not seem that long ago for some of us, but a lot has changed in Formula 1 since the 1990s, as we can see from these epic onboards.
Watching back onboard footage from past eras of F1 is a great way to appreciate just how challenging, physically demanding and tough it was for drivers at the time.
The 90s saw monstrous F1 cars continue to evolve, with huge steps forward being made on the technical side.
On track, there were iconic battles between the likes of Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Mika Hakkinen.
Let’s reminisce F1 in the 90s by taking a look at some of the best onboards on the internet:
Here’s Senna putting in a Jerez masterclass to take pole position in 1990. That sound… the bumpiness of the track… the downshifting of the gears. Everything was tougher back in the early 90s.
Now take a ride onboard the Ferraris of Prost and Mansell at the 1990 Australian Grand Prix, at the incredibly bumpy Adelaide street circuit. Featuring typically energetic commentary from Murray Walker and James Hunt!
Senna. Monaco. Enough said. Enjoy!
Speed at Spa
Here’s Riccardo Patrese driving his Williams at the 1990 Belgian Grand Prix, an awesome quick lap at Spa – look at those corner entry speeds! It’s insane to see how quick the cars were back in the early part of this era.
Berger on the attack
Now let’s move on a little bit, to the 1991 Hungarian Grand Prix and a tricky first lap for Gerhard Berger in his McLaren.
More Monaco madness
This time, it’s the great Michael Schumacher at the wheel, driving his Benetton at the start of his career in 1992. These cars were proper, proper machines…
Sure, this video doesn’t have sound, but it’s hard to find a decent quality clip of Senna’s famous first lap at Donington Park in 1993.
Here’s a variety of onboard views of the Canadian GP start from the 1994 season, following the likes of Hill and David Coulthard.
Taking on Silverstone
How about another Schumacher hot lap? This time at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, in 1996.
Villeneuve on a charge
Jacques Villeneuve went on to take the 1997 world championship with Williams. Here he is chucking his car around the Imola circuit.
Smooth as you like
The Benetton wasn’t the fastest car of the 1998 F1 season but Alexander Wurz still managed a good lap of Magny-Cours.
Off they go
