The 2016 Formula 1 Season In Gifs

The 2016 Formula 1 season has been a pretty eventful one to say the least. With ups and downs, funny moments and sad ones, the best way to sum it up is in gif form.

We’ve taken a look at the record-breaking 21 races and picked out a key moment from each one:

Australia

Alonso’s huge shunt ruled him out of the next race

The F1 season kicked off in dramatic style at the Australian Grand Prix when Fernando Alonso’s car was pitched into this scary roll.

Bahrain

Grosjean showed Haas could mix it up with the established teams

Romain Grosjean’s feisty drive through the field in Bahrain was one of the highlights of the race.

China

“Opportunistic” is probably the word to describe this double overtake!

Sebastian Vettel got very cheeky in China at the pit lane entry, passing two slower cars on the run to the speed limiter line.

Russia

The Vettel radio moaning begins!

“Oh I’m out, crash” Vettel said after Daniil Kvyat’s clumsy first few corners of the Russian GP.

Spain

It all ended in tears…

Undoubtedly one of the most memorable moments of the season, we’ll be talking about Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s Spanish GP smash and Max Verstappen’s maiden win for many years to come.

Monaco

His sad face on the podium afterwards was tragic.

Watching Red Bull rush to get Daniel Ricciardo’s tyres after a team error was painful and made even worse when it ended up costing him victory.

Canada

F1 cars speeding past at high speed? Nah, these seagulls weren’t fussed.

“Seagull-gate” rocked the post-Canadian GP interviews, when Vettel accused the birds of costing him time. Classic Seb, right?

Baku

When team work comes together…

The European GP saw Williams set a new pit stop record. It’s definitely a “blink and you’ll miss it” tyre change!

Austria

Collision number two for the Silver Arrows drivers.

The Mercedes tension reached boiling point when they collided after a last-lap move for the lead by Hamilton.

Britain

Vettel goes for a spin at Abbey, he wasn’t the only one…

Spinning seemed to be the name of the game at Silverstone. Most of the drivers could barely keep it on the track in the tricky conditions.

Hungary

hungary
“Going, going, going aaaaaand gone”.

Qualifying at the Hungaroring took place in soaking wet conditions and threw up lots of drama and crashes.

Germany

germany
Drinking bubbly out of a shoe, because why not?

Daniel Ricciardo brought the ‘shoey’ to F1 in Germany and we love him even more for it.

Belgium

belgium
Thankfully K-Mag walked away from this one at Eau Rouge unharmed.

Kevin Magnussen’s monster Belgian GP shunt brought out the red flag and was clearly one of the biggest accidents of the year.

Italy

italy
Perfection, absolute overtaking perfection from Danny Ric.

Ricciardo treated us to more awesome overtakes this year and his late braking move on Valtteri Bottas at Monza was one of the best.

Singapore

singapore
No this isn’t fake, there was actually a marshal running away from F1 cars.

This marshal got caught out by the Singapore GP restart and turned himself into a meme/viral trend instantly.

Malaysia

malaysia
Was this Hamilton’s title chance literally going up in flames?

Hamilton’s title bid took a major hit when his engine blew up while he was leading in Malaysia.

Japan

japan
Max always pushes things to the limit, but was this too far?

Verstappen’s defensive driving came under criticism at the Japanese GP after this near-collision with Hamilton at Suzuka.

USA

usa
Alonso gets his elbows out at COTA.

Fernando Alonso’s gutsy overtakes at the US GP were breath-taking, although Felipe Massa wasn’t too pleased about this one…

Mexico

mexico
This move eventually cost Vettel his inherited P3.

The end of the Mexican GP was SO confusing. There were corner cuts, close calls, contact, post-race time penalties and three different people in third place within the space of an evening.

Brazil

brazil
That hit us right in the feels.

It doesn’t get more emotional than this. After crashing out of his final Brazilian GP, Massa was met by this welcome in the pit lane as he walked back to the Williams pit box.

Abu Dhabi

Whichever team you support, this was a pretty cool thing to see!

And so it all ended in Abu Dhabi, with four cars chasing each other hard for the victory and the two title protagonists battling it out for the title.

Hamilton won the race, but it was Rosberg who secured the title. A tense, dramatic and typically eventful end to what has been a pretty mad year of F1.
