With all the hype for Fernando Alonso racing in this year’s Indianapolis 500, there was just a small matter of him actually being able to compete in the race.
Today, Alonso took to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his ROP (Rookie Orientation Program). To pass the program, he had to do 10 laps between 205-210 mph, 15 between 210-215 mph, then 15 over 215 mph.
Fernando managed to complete the ROP in just 50 laps and achieved a best lap speed of 219.654 mph around the 2.5 mile motor speedway.
On this first Indy run, Fernando Alonso AVERAGED a higher speed (209.9mph) than his MAXIMUM speed in F1 this year (200.5mph) #AlonsoRunsIndy

It all means Alonso, in his #29 McLaren Honda Andretti, will compete in the 101th running of the Indianapolis 500 as he attempts to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport (Monaco, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans).
