Reserve drivers are super important in F1. If it arises that a driver can’t race, whether that be because of illness or injury, every team wants to make sure they can get a replacement into the race and pick up those vital championship points!
With Daniel Ricciardo testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday, it’s got many people wondering if he will race in Bahrain next weekend. Well, it’s hoped he will be fine and recover in time, BUT it’s left fans wondering who the Papaya team has as their reserves.
Last year McLaren relied on the Mercedes duo of Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries, and it’s not known if that contract is still a thing. There was also the opportunity to put Paul di Resta – yes, you read that correctly – in the car if Stoff and Nyck were busy over a Formula E weekend.

Well, now neighbouring team Alpine have offered the team a helping hand in the shape of their young talent Oscar Piastri!
“In the spirit of offering maximum racing opportunities to our stable of young talent, we have agreed that McLaren F1 may call upon BWT Alpine F1 Team Reserve Driver Oscar Piastri in the event one of their drivers is unable to race.”
As well as being super helpful and will undoubtedly put McLaren’s mind at ease, it’s also a great opportunity to have a cheeky look behind the scenes of an enemy garage 😂
