Watch Michael Andretti’s 1996 IndyCar Test In Stunning IMAX Quality

The name of Andretti is pretty big in American motorsports. Between legend Mario and son Michael the family has amassed a Formula One World Championship, IndyCar championships and an astonishing amount of race victories across many different motorsports series. Grandson Marco isn’t too shabby either, so there must be something in the gene pool.

Back in 1996 someone decided to make a documentary about Michael’s season, developing the CART Lola with its new Cosworth engine. Alongside is the story of a man trying to rebuild one of Mario’s old roadsters from 1964. The film featured some pretty awesome footage and considering the film was made nearly 20 years ago it’s astonishing how the visuals compare to now, thanks to the decision to film it for IMAX. To pile even more awesomeness on top, it was narrated by screen legend and racing enthusiast Paul Newman. The film itself was later released on DVD and is still available – you can even get it on Blu-Ray in the USA.

The video above is a short montage from the film of Michael testing at Sebring, Mid-Ohio and Road America. Watch and enjoy onboard footage of one of the greats of American motorsport racing one of the beasts of IndyCar’s heyday.
