It was bad enough that the new European Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan has been scheduled for the same weekend of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans but now, it turns out the two races are set to clash with each other.
Firstly, Baku qualifying will begin at the exact moment the world famous endurance race gets under way. Then (and arguably even worse) the lights will go out for the inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix just as the Le Mans winner is crossing the finish line.
FIA President Jean Todt claims the clash was impossible to avoid but a 6pm start for the European Grand Prix isn’t exactly the norm for an F1 race.
Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg, along with Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy, was a surprise winner at Le Mans last year and the German’s success apparently sparked interest in the race among his fellow F1 drivers.
What a shame then that a new F1 race conveniently fell on the very same weekend of Le Mans. Yes. How very convenient.
