Last year, Formula E had a thrilling title finale in London which saw Nelson Piquet Jnr crowned champion as Sebastien Buemi lost out by a single point.
This year, Sebastien Buemi was going for the title again, this time against Lucas di Grassi. Both went into the finale equal in points but with di Grassi ahead on count back. So the Brazilian could just win the title by taking Buemi out, right? Well…
Whether it was deliberate or not, it had surely gifted di Grassi the title… well not quite.
Controversially, Formula E give points for fastest lap and both Buemi and di Grassi made it back to the pits to jump in their spare cars.
So in the most bizarre way to win the championship, both drivers went out in clear air to try and set the fastest lap… and Buemi did it by just 0.05 seconds.
.@LucasdiGrassi fails to set the fastest lap! @Sebastien_buemi may win this championship by 0.05 seconds! #FormulaE
