One of the stops on the WTCC calendar is the historic Vila Real street circuit in Portugal. It’s an awesome track, bu unfortunately it seems the safety measures there are also somewhat historic.
During FP1 Tom Coronel went off the circuit with a brake problem and crashed straight into a recovery vehicle.
Thankfully nobody was hurt, but it’s incredibly worrying to see such a lack of safety features at a track which is raced on by FIA-backed championships like the WTCC
It wasn’t only recovery vehicles that were exposed, but there were members of the public in the area too. Luckily nothing worse happened, but surely the safety of the circuit will be looked at to ensure something like this never happens again.
