Massa’s exit from from the Brazilian Grand Prix was not the way we wanted him to finish his home race, but it set the stage for one of the most touching moments in the history of F1.
The live pictures did a great job of showing his send-off, but to really capture the atmosphere of the occasion you’d have to be in the stands. Thanks to these fan videos, we can all experience a little bit of what it was like to see a local hero bow out for one last time.
First there’s the disbelief as he crashes…
…then there’s the acknowledgement as he gets out…
…the initial silence as he walks away…
…and finally the appreciation of one of the most loved drivers in the sport as he tears up and displays his national flag with pride.
Wait, something in my eye again? Must be allergy season…
