In news that I think most of us saw coming, Alpine and Fernando Alonso have announced they will continue together into 2022. The two-time World Champion was given the option to stay with the team for a second year in his original contract, and has confirmed he has chosen to do so.
Alonso returned to F1 this year after a two year sabbatical from the sport. His performance with the team has surprised many, with Fernando achieving his season-best result of fourth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix last time out.
“I’m very happy to confirm the contract extension with Alpine F1 Team into 2022,” he said in a statement by the team.
“I felt at home the moment I returned to this team and have been welcomed back with open arms. It is a pleasure to work again with some of the brightest minds in our sport at Enstone and Viry-Châtillon.”
This news means Alpine will have the duo of Esteban Ocon and Alonso to guide the team through the new F1 regulations that will come into force next year.

“We’re targeting more positive memories for the rest of this season but also crucially from next year onwards with the new regulation changes coming into F1. I have been a big supporter of the need for a level playing field and change in the sport, and the 2022 season will be a great opportunity for that.
“I am looking forward to the rest of this year and racing alongside Esteban in 2022 for Alpine.”
Alonso hinted at the announcement yesterday on Twitter, sharing a cryptic tweet in a secret code. Recent Hungarian GP race winner, and Alonso’s teammate, Esteban Ocon, also got in on the fun.
