Fernando Alonso Will Replace Vettel At Aston Martin Next Year. Yes, We’re Serious.

Well, that’s a curveball. Fernando Alonso has signed with Aston Martin for 2023 on a multi-year deal. Yep, we’re serious. We’re kinda shocked at this news.

The Alpine driver seemed to be remaining loyal to the French team with paddock talk being that he was soon to re-sign for 2023, but Lawrence Stroll really said ‘not today’.

“This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula One today,” Alonso said about the deal.

“I have known Lawrence and Lance for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula One.

“I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

“No one in Formula One today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.”

Aston Martin didn’t hang about replacing Sebastian Vettel, who announced his retirement from F1 at the end of the season.

Did you see this one coming?

Well… Piastri to Alpine must be a done deal. Also if they get rid of Latifi, that opens the door to Williams for other drivers with Nyck de Vries and Logan Sargeant as the most likely candidates.

I feel sorry for de Vries, because with his luck of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for an F1 seat I think Sargeant will be the preferred candidate. He’s a Williams junior driver after all and with the growing popularity in the US, it would be commercially more interesting to bring in an American driver.

  • I don’t know why Alonso is signing with Aston Martin, considering the fact that Alpine has a wayy better car then Aston Martin.

Great move for Fernando and for Aston Martin. Lawrence Stroll likes former WDC drivers. Fernando was the only viable choice.
