The two-time Formula 1 champion put in a brilliant driving display during his debut Indy 500, taking several turns in the lead of the race.
It ended in heartbreak when he retired with just over 20 laps to go, but it was still a very impressive first attempt. To be honest though, we’re not all that surprised.
After Takuma Sato’s win, there was the traditional victory banquet featuring all 33 drivers of this year’s Indy 500.
Alonso went up on stage and was awarded Rookie of the Year, going on to make an epic speech about his experience and time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
It was, at times, emotional and there were a lot of laughs too. We already knew Alonso was good at
firing across the banter and he proved it once again.
From joking about Sato being his “favourite Japanese IndyCar driver” to making fun of some quirkier traditions at the Indy 500, it made us like Alonso even more.
