The original 1976 film C’etait un Rendez-Vous caused massive controversy when it was released. The film is essentially one continuous shot of an early morning thrash across the streets of Paris from the bumper of director Claude Lelouch’s Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9, and the V12 soundtrack of a Ferrari 275 GTB dubbed over in post-production.
Last month, Ferrari and Lelouch made their own version of the film, called Le Grand Rendez-vous. The streets of Monaco were closed and Charles Leclerc was called upon to drive a Ferrari SF90 Stradale.
It could have been epic. Instead, what we’ve got is this incredibly awkward-looking, over-produced promo video that in no way captures the spirit of the original.
OK, so the onboard lap of the track in its non-built-up form is pretty cool, but the rest of it? The clapping as he arrives at the hotel? The awkward elbow bump with Prince Albert II? Big cringe. And why is so much of the video devoted to flowers?
Nice try, Ferrari, but this could – and should – have been so much cooler.
