So you may remember hearing late last year about how Formula E’s new support series would feature self-driving cars. Now I for one was fully expecting the cars to be some kind of Vauxhall Adam or something along those lines but Holy Shit look at this instead!
This is the actual car that will race in the Roborace series supporting the 2016/17 Formula E season and it looks absolutely incredible.
The reason it looks so great is that the series have appointed Daniel Simon as Chief Design Officer. Some will already know about his work but if you don’t, he’s the guy who worked on Sci-Fi blockbusters like Tron and Oblivion… and F1 fans will probably know him for doing the slightly bonkers HRT livery from 2011, that featured text like “This is a cool spot” and “Your logo here.”
“My goal was to create a vehicle that takes full advantage of the unusual opportunities of having no driver without ever compromising on beauty,” said Simon. “Racing engineers and aerodynamicists have worked with me from the beginning to strike that balance. The Roborace is as much about competition as it is entertainment. Therefore – and quite unusual in today’s racing world – beauty was very high on our agenda and we work hard to merge the best performance with stunning styling.”
OK, now I’m interested. Very interested.
