Three races in and the inaugural season of Formula E is in the full swing, but while the season boasts a completely original series, this suggest that isn’t exactly the case.

This is footage from Formula Lightning in 1994 and as you can see, it’s an electric single-seater racing series. So it may not look as professional as Formula E but that’s because it was made for University students and not ex-Formula One drivers. And while Formula E drivers jump into another car, Formula Lightning pitstops consist of the team reloading the cars with batteries! (Watch at 4:52)

The series raced across America with the first race supporting the Grand Prix of Cleveland CART race. The last race was held at Mid-Ohio in October 2004.
