Grosjean Explains The Reason For His Bizarre Crash Behind The Safety Car

After crashing in qualifying and having to start last, Romain Grosjean had a strong race and worked his way into the points. But towards the end of the race, after the safety car had been deployed for the Red Bull collision, he undid all his hard work when he binned his Haas whilst warming his tyres behind the safety car.

Grosjean was quickly onto team radio to pass the blame onto Marcus Ericsson in the pursuing Sauber, but the pictures clearly showed Grosjean making the error all by himself. Maybe that’s why the medical car was deployed, because the Frenchman was clearly seeing things…

Afterwards he explained the real reason for his somewhat embarrassing error:

“There was a lot of wind, the car was going left and right, pushing then not pushing. I was warming up my tyres and bumped into a switch that I’d moved by two positions. When I touched the brakes, the brake balance was locked rearward – it just locked the rear wheels and I spun. It’s always hard when you lose so many points and obviously when you crash under the safety car,”

Strange and unfortunate, yes – but along with Sergey Sirotkin, he’s now one of only two drivers who have yet to score points this season…
