The Toro Rossos were flying during qualifying, but Brendon Hartley’s session almost didn’t take off. During Q1 he suddenly reported “crazy understeer” at Turn 7. It turned out he’d hit a poor, unsuspecting bird, with Toro Rosso tweeting a picture of the hole it caused.

That extra understeer will have made Hartley need to feather the throttle on his way back to the pits to take on a new wing – something the bird didn’t have the luxury of.
Hartley swiftly bounced back from the setback and, egged on by his team, managed to qualify a career-best 11th.
