Here Is Why Each F1 Driver Has Their Penalty Points In 2023

Ahhhh, penalty points. The one thing that drivers fear. They are handed to drivers if they do something that the FIA perceives as dangerous, such as causing a collision or ignoring yellow flags. The penalty points remain on their licence for a year before expiring. However, if a driver gets 12 points in that year, they’ll earn themselves a race ban.

We’ve had some pretty close calls with penalty points adding up over the last season or so – Pierre Gasly, we’re looking at you.

Here is a breakdown of why each driver has their penalty points and when they will expire.

TWO PENALTY POINTS

Brazilian GP 2022 – Two Points
Expires: 13th November 2023
Reason: causing a collision with Lewis Hamilton during the race

TWO PENALTY POINTS

Singapore GP 2022 – Two Points 
Expires: 3rd October 2023
Reason: falling more than 10 car lengths behind the Safety Car

FOUR PENALTY POINTS

Belgian GP 2023 – Two Points
Expires: 29th July 2024
Reason: causing a collision with Perez during the sprint race

Italian GP 2023 – Two Points
Expires: 3rd September 2024 
Reason: causing a collision with Piastri 

FOUR PENALTY POINTS

United States GP 2022 – Two Points 
Expires: 23rd October 2023
Reason: incident with Sainz at Turn 1

Monaco GP 2023 – Two Points 
Expires: 28th May 2024
Reason: rejoining the track in an unsafe manner, causing a collision with Perez

ONE PENALTY POINT

Japanese GP 2022 – One Point
Expires: 9th October 2023
Reason: leaving the track and gaining an advantage

TWO PENALTY POINTS

Australian GP 2023 – Two Points 
Expires: 2nd April 2024
Reason: causing a collision with Alonso at Turn 1

Brazilian GP 2022 – Two Points 
Expires: 13th November 2023
Reason: causing a collision with Leclerc during the race

Expires: 12th November 2023
Reason: dangerous manoeuvre with Vettel during Sprint Race

British GP 2023 – Two Points 
Expires: 9th July 2024
Reason: causing a collision involving Pierre Gasly

Reason: speeding under Red Flag conditions
