It’s been a rollercoaster of a racing year for Liam Lawson, but it’s about to get A LOT better!
In his second season in F2, Lawson currently sits in 8th in the drivers’ standings, but during F1’s next (and possibly last – though probably not) visit to Spa, the Kiwi will make his FP1 debut with AlphaTauri.
The Red Bull junior has tested with AlphaTauri before, jumping in the car for an F1 rookie test in 2021.
However, as part of F1’s new regulation that forces all teams to give two practice sessions to rookie drivers, Lawson will get his first taste of a 2022 F1 car after the summer break.
This was all confirmed by AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost in Hungary, who told media including The Race: “We plan to run Liam Lawson in FP1 in Spa.”
It’s not clear who Lawson is actually subbing in for yet, but we do know it’ll be either Pierre Gasly or Yuki Tsunoda (great insight). Both drivers got eliminated from title contention in Hungary, so they probably won’t mind skipping just one practice session!
We look forward to seeing what Lawson can do!
