Some F1 fans wear caps, others get a tattoo… and this guy? This guy spent four months making a ridiculous huge and detailed McLaren MP4/8 model from scratch. This is Antonio, a huge Ayrton Senna fan and model maker that one day decided he want a big ass Senna model, so why not make one?
The model as a massive 1/5 scale, that’s about 3ft long and is an accurate replica of the McLaren Mp4/8 that took Senna to his last Formula One win, the 1993 Australian Grand Prix.
Every single piece in the model, decals and even the base were made by me, by hand. As you will see in some of the progress pictures, there are some parts that were 3D printed and some others laser cut. I modeled the 3D pieces in Maya and traced the ones that were to be laser cut in Illustrator as well as all the sponsor logos. Those were then printed on clear waterslide decal paper.
I made moulds of the 3D printed and some hand made parts so make copies in resin. Same with the tyres, only difference those were replicated in fibreglass. Air valves, cockpit and steering wheel buttons/switches, antenae were machined using a dremel…because I really lack proper equipment so I need to get things working with whatever I can find hanging around and a bit of ingenuity! The Seatbelts: blue hardware is 3D printed, the silver buckles are aluminium sheets hand cut and sanded.
The cockpit, nose and main body as well as the main wings were made by hand using PVC foam sheets of varying widths.
Carbon fiber on the floor and rear wing is a CF vynil. Front wing, brake air intakes and cockpit was airbrushed.
Body finish: Automotive paints + 2K clear. It took me about 4 months to complete and as I said I’m used to building models, but NOT making them from scratch so I had to learn to work almost every material used because I had never done anything like this before.
Huge thanks to Antonio for sending us the photos of this awesome project!
