Many family members of Formula One drivers attend Grands Prix, but none was quite so well loved as Jenson Button’s late father, John. With his customary pink shirt, he was often seen on camera in the paddock, supporting Jenson through thick and thin. When Jenson won the championship in 2009 the emotional post-race scenes with his father were some of the most memorable off-track moments of recent times.

However, before Jenson was even born, John Button was a pretty handy rallycross driver. Runner-up in the 1976 British Rallycross championship, Button and his eye-catching VW Beetle became well known in the UK. Here’s a video of Button Senior battling hard at Lydden Hill in 1979 – now driving a Golf, he goes for a slightly ambitious move on the Mini of Paul Springett, sending it off to a massive accident and prompting some classic commentary from Murray Walker.
