In driver market news that actually is a little bit of a surprise, Toro Rosso have announced they will be fielding an unchanged driver line up in 2017, with Daniil Kvyat retaining his seat alongside Carlos Sainz.
After his demotion to Toro Rosso from Red Bull earlier this year it looked certain that Kvyat would be left without a seat in the Red Bull programme, but after the likes of Force India and Renault started showing interest it seems they wanted to hold onto the talented young Russian.
“To those other teams who have been sniffing around our talented pair, well hands off, they’re staying put!” quipped the press release from Toro Rosso.
2013 GP3 champion Kvyat scored his second career podium in China this year, but a disastrous race at his home Grand Prix was used as an excuse to promote Max Verstappen up to the main team. With his confidence understandably knocked it took a while for Daniil to get onto terms with his team mate but in recent races has been showing decent form once again.
As tends to be the way with the Red Bull driver programme good news for one driver means bad news for another, and it looks as though GP2 title contender Pierre Gasly will miss out on an F1 seat in much the same way as Antonio Felix Da Costa did a few years ago – and to the same driver as well!
