We don’t often see race drivers clashing on the last lap, because the field is usually a bit more spready out – but not in this Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race.
During the opening race of the Paul Ricard round, Shwartzman was closing down leader Fenestraz as they entered the tight and twisty chicane, after a safety car restart.
But, when Fenestraz left the door open, Shwartzman attempted to dive up the inside and snatch the lead away at the last moment, but the door was then firmly shut.
(Skip to the one minute mark for the incident)
The clashing wheels pitched Fenestraz’s FR2.0 car into a flip, sliding along the run-off area upside down before eventually coming to rest next to the corner exit.
It was a nasty crash, the car bouncing around upside down, with Shwartzman going on to cross the line in P1 and take the victory despite the contact and damage.
Whether that result stands or not, we’ll have to wait and see, as the incident is under investigation.
