The year is 1992. Unhappy at Williams for signing Prost when he didn’t want him as his team-mate, Mansell quit F1 altogether and moved over the Atlantic to race in the CART series. Not only was he immediately quick, he won his first race, came third at the Indianapolis 500 and won the championship in his first year. The following season however the love affair turned sour and Mansell was back racing in F1 as a part-time replacement for the deceased Ayrton Senna.
But before all of that there was the small matter of learning how to actually drive an IndyCar. And so he turned up one winter’s day to a small road course in Arizona to see what he had let himself in for. Luckily for us the event was filmed and even Murray Walker lent his voice to the footage. Watch below and see the beginnings of one of the most exciting car, engine and driver combinations in IndyCar history.
