The IndyCar championship leader hit the barrier at the exit of the pits and was then collected by another car at Watkins Glen
His lead in the standings is now just three points after he admitted to simply coming out of the Watkins Glen pit lane too quickly, hit the brakes, locked up and slipped off on cold tyres.
As Newgarden’s Penske car rebounded off the barrier, it was collected by Sebastien Bourdais, who didn’t have anywhere to go.
One thing that becomes clear in the replay is how Newgarden’s car was scooped up by the front nose of Bourdais’ IndyCar machine – both drivers probably needed fresh race suits after that…
What makes the whole situation even weirder is that Tony Kanaan basically did the exact same thing as Newgarden just moments later.
