Newgarden’s IndyCar Pit Exit Crash At Watkins Glen Was A Weird One

It’s not often we see drivers losing control and hitting the pit lane exit wall, but that’s exactly what happened during last weekend’s IndyCar race at Watkins Glen.

And it has set up what should be a thrilling IndyCar finale at Sonoma later this month, with the driver involved being series leader Josef Newgarden. The crash cost him heavily in the title scrap.

His lead in the standings is now just three points after he admitted to simply coming out of the Watkins Glen pit lane too quickly, hit the brakes, locked up and slipped off on cold tyres.

As Newgarden’s Penske car rebounded off the barrier, it was collected by Sebastien Bourdais, who didn’t have anywhere to go.

One thing that becomes clear in the replay is how Newgarden’s car was scooped up by the front nose of Bourdais’ IndyCar machine – both drivers probably needed fresh race suits after that…

What makes the whole situation even weirder is that Tony Kanaan basically did the exact same thing as Newgarden just moments later.
