There’ll be a new face on the grid when F1 returns from the summer break as it’s been announced that 19-year-old Frenchman, Esteban Ocon will replace Rio Haryanto at Manor for the rest of the 2016 season.
As rumoured, Haryanto’s financial backing appears to have dried up and Manor have terminated his contract with the team.
Ocon meanwhile is one of the most highly rated junior drivers in motorsport right now. Max Verstappen may have stolen the headlines that year, but it was the Frenchman who took the title. He then followed that up by winning the GP3 title in 2015 before being plonked into DTM by Mercedes.
“We are very pleased that this opportunity has opened up for Esteban,” said Mercedes-Benz Motorsport boss Toto Wolff. “Manor has again had the confidence to give a chance to a promising young talent. Esteban did an exceptional job in the works Mercedes at the Silverstone test and we are excited to see him take his first steps in an F1 race environment.”
Ocon joins fellow Mercedes hot-shot Pascal Wehrlein at the Manor team.
