You have to get up pretty early to beat the London traffic, and those who did this morning were treated to the sight of an LMP1 car driving past some of the capitals most famous landmarks. Reigning WEC champion and former Red Bull ‘number 2 driver’ Mark Webber drove his Porsche 919 Hybrid as part of the launch of the new Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid in an effort to demonstrate how technology from motor racing can transfer to road cars.
Webber (who has won the last three races in the WEC this season with Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard) thoroughly enjoyed the event: “It was an amazing experience. We stopped a lot of traffic but they were pretty excited to see the car, everyone was taking photos and it was a real show stopper!”
This wasn’t the first time Webber has driven racing machinery on public roads, having done a demo run across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in a Williams F1 car in 2005, and across the Bolte Bridge in Melbourne for Red Bull in 2011.
The cars set off from Park Lane at 6:00am and went through Hyde Park corner, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, past the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben and towards the London Eye on the south bank of the River Thames, making for some unique photo opportunities.
Did he have to pay the congestion charge? After all, the 919 is a hybrid…
