Rear wing failure is a big deal in any form of motorsport, so when Ken Smith’s broke during a Formula 5000 race at Pukekohe it was always going to be a sizeable accident.
Smith ending up bouncing over the front wheels of another car and his Lola T332 clattered into the barriers at more than 120mph.
Smith, a Kiwi racing legend is 75-years-old and in his 60th year of racing, and thankfully was able to walk away from the accident unharmed – despite his head making some alarming movement and the fact that his feet became exposed during the crash.
The race was red-flagged, and when things got underway again fans were treated to a mega finish between Clark Proctor and Mike Collins.
Proctor looked to have it all under control, but Collins got a serious run out of the final corner.
Just 0.07 seconds separated the pair at the finish, with Proctor just holding on to take the win.
Collins then spun on the cooldown lap, presumably as he was too busy wishing that the finish line was just a few feet further down the road.
