It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for… and then got so bored of the ‘will they/won’t they’ that when the news arrived it was far, far less exciting than it should of been.
Yes, Renault are finally taking over Lotus and will return to Formula One as a full constructor in 2016.
“Renault had two options: to come back at 100 percent or leave,” said Renault CEO, Carlos Ghosn. “After a detailed study, I have decided that Renault will be in Formula 1, starting 2016. The final details supplied by F1’s main stakeholders gave us the confidence to accept this new challenge. Our ambition is to win–even if it will take some time.”
Team Enstone (I’m calling them that otherwise it’ll got damn confusing) raced under the Renault name until 2011 before becoming Lotus with Renault engines and then switching to Mercedes engines in 2015.
More details of Renault’s return will be revealed in January, fingers crossed they’ll announce they’ll be racing in their awesome yellow livery too.
