Virtual racing is getting more and more realistic, just look at how people like Jann Mardenborough or Lucas Ordóñez have gone from gaming in their bedrooms to racing at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours.

Now, Castrol EDGE have taken things a step further in their new viral ad which blends together real-life and virtual-reality racing into one mad concept.

Ben Collins (who we all know as ‘The guy who used to be The Stig’) and Formula Drift racer Matt Powers were the drivers who took on the challenge of this unique race driving real world 2015 V8 Ford Mustangs around two separate tracks.

Now for the twist, as both drivers were fitted with an Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets, putting them onto a mad videogame-like level with boulders, steam and lava. Both Collins and Powers therefore race each other in the virtual reality world while driving a real car around a track for a crazy-realistic experience.

“I have taken on some extraordinary driving trials in my career, but this was certainly way up there,” said Collins. “The hardest part was getting used to the VR world and truly letting myself go – putting my foot down and trusting my instinct over my rational brain. It’s hard when every bone in your body is telling you that what you can see isn’t real, but you know you’re still in control of a real car driving at speed.”

I don’t know about you but I’m sat here watching thinking, ‘I want a go!’
