If you find red flags and safety car periods annoying in F1, it’s probably best to give the TCR races from Macau this year a miss.
This track blockage in the first race was just one of many incidents in a weekend which saw only four full racing laps completed across both races. With the event also being the final round of the TCR International Series it made for one of the strangest championship deciders ever.
Championship leader James Nash was eliminated in this pile-up, and to add insult to injury his title rival Stefano Comini won the race. But the combination of a long red flag period and time spent behind the safety car meant that the cars couldn’t reach the 75% distance needed for full points, so the gap between the two drivers going into the final race was just half a point.
There were more incidents in race two as yet another long red flag period led to a two-lap sprint to the chequered flag. Former F1 driver Tiago Monteiro won while Comini finished fourth in another half-points race, enough for him to win the championship.
