In the closing stages of the race Whincup looked in prime position – he was leading, whilst McLaughlin was hit with penalties for speeding in the pitlane and contact with another car, dropping him right down the order – surely a set-up for a classic finale if ever there was one!
With Whincup in the lead, McLaughlin had to recover to 11th place to win the title and with two laps to go, that’s exactly where he found himself. He had to fend off a charging Craig Lowndes however, and on the penultimate lap, this happened:

McLaughlin crossed the line in 11th but was handed a post-race penalty, dropping him down the order and handing a seventh title to Whincup.
