Thrill-seekers: The F1 roller coasters

Abu Dhabi is certainly a place for people who enjoy speed, home to not just an F1 circuit but also the Formula Rosso, the worlds fastest roller coaster. Still it’s not the only F1 style roller coaster to exist.

The glamour of Abu Dhabi to the… pissing rain of Blackpool, here’s when F1 meets roller coasters.

Formula Rossa – Abu Dhabi

Located at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, the Formula Rossa is the fastest roller coaster in the world. The coaster can accelerate up to it’s top speed of 150mph (240kph) in just under 5 seconds, enough to mash up your face (see picture above).

The track itself is around 1.5 miles and is based on… you guessed it. The famous Monza Grand Prix circuit.

Ring°racer – Nurburgring

The ‘Ring (stupid degree sign) Racer’ runs alongside the start straight of the Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit. It can accelerate up to 135mph (217kph) in a mind-blowing 2.5 seconds.

It was due to open in Autumn 2009 but has been delayed till 2011 because something exploded, injuring 7 people and smashing windows… Hmm I think I’ll give this one a miss.

Pepsi Max Big One – Blackpool

Now for something a little more British. It’s not quite the glamour of Abu Dhabi but back in 2003 the Jordan team hooked up a car to the ‘Pepsi Max Big One’ in Blackpool for a publicity stunt. I bet he regretted not wearing a helmet, looks kind of painful to me.

Why am I even bothering with all this? You just came here to watch the video of Alonso’s face stretching again didn’t you…
