Top Ten: Helmet Designs Of 2013

F1 Grand Prix of Singapore - Qualifying

Whether you like them or not, helmet changes are now more popular than ever in Formula One and we’ve seen many, many designs in 2013 but which one was the best? We’ve put together our list of the ten best helmets from the year.

Click below to see if you agree…

10. Lewis Hamilton – Brazil

Lewis Hamilton’s standard F1 helmet already looks very Brazilian-themed but he took it to another level for the season finale. The design featured the Brazilian flag and the Cristo Redentor statue in Rio de Janeiro.

It was certainly a lot better than his Michael Jackson design from Austin. That was bad, was bad, was really, really bad!

9. Romain Grosjean – Austin

Romain Grosjean is another driver who’s had a few helmet changes this year, his best was this design from Austin, a tribute to American actor and ‘King Of Cool’ Steve McQueen. Grosjean of course made a great escape of his own, after a difficult start to the season he’s all set to be Lotus number one next year… possibly second to Maldonado’s cheque book.

8. Sebastian Vettel – Singapore

It was going to take some topping after his flashing lights design from the previous year but Sebastian Vettel’s Singapore design still looks pretty snazzy. This helmet even glows in the dark perfect for Marina Bay… if the lights go out.

7. Felipe Massa – Brazil

It may not be the most interesting of designs but Felipe Massa’s Ferrari tribute helmet is certainly a nice touch. As well as the red chrome it also lists his achievements, apart from his ‘2008 World Champion for 38 seconds.’

6. Sebastian Vettel – Monaco

Who says F1 drivers don’t have funny any more. This cheeky design from Sebastian Vettel featured a Monaco pin up girl in a swimsuit and when Seb’s helmet gets hot, her clothes come off… that sounds so very wrong.

5. Jean-Eric Vergne – Monaco

There’s some many fancy looking helmets these days but Jean-Eric Vergne’s Monaco lid showed that sometimes the simplest of designs can look absolutely brilliant. The previous year he paid tribute to Jean Alesi and this year it was the late great French racing driver Francois Cevert.

4. Giedo Van Der Garde – Austin

‘Keep Austin Weird’ they say, well Giedo Van Der Garde certainly did that at the US Grand Prix with this crazy looking design. The helmet featured all sorts of strange doodles including a balloon that had been charged up to pop with KERS.

3. Sebastian Vettel – Red Bull Stratos

Australian F1 Grand Prix - Practice

Changing his helmet every race, there’s no real surprise that Vettel was going to have a few designs in our top ten but our favourite was this one. This astronaut helmet replica is a tribute to the one Felix Baumgartner wore during his super-sonic sky dive, Red Bull Stratos.

2. Giedo Van Der Garde – Standard

All these special helmets and it’s two standard designs that top our list, the first from rookie Giedo Van Der Garde. This simple but very affective design features a Formula One comic strip, which changes race by race.

1. Heikki Kovalainen – Lotus Standard

There’s nothing we hate more than drivers that match their helmet colours to their cars so Heikki Kovalainen’s electric pink design not only looks super cool but also stands out from the crowd. Bravo Heikki, you’ve somehow managed to top your Angry Birds design.

What is your rating for Schumacher?
