Verstappen Suggested An Interesting Change That Could Improve Overtaking At Zandvoort

Zandvoort is an old-school circuit and while it produces an awesome spectacle in qualifying, it didn’t exactly provide the most interesting of races again.

Despite the circuit going through a few changes ahead of its return to the F1 calendar, it’s still a circuit that’s extremely difficult to pass on. However, during a post-race chat in the cooldown room, you can overhear race winner Max Verstappen making a suggestion.

While watching back the moment at Turn 3 where Sebastian Vettel held up Lewis Hamilton and backed him up into Sergio Perez, Verstappen said “It’s too flat on the inside. If they would bank the inside as well, I think you could run there a bit.”

It’s very much single file for most of the lap at Zandvoort but the reigning champion believes that a change to the Turn 3 banking could allow more cars to try the inside line and make a passing move.

Perez went to the inside line following Vettel’s incident with Hamilton, but it showed that even with the Mercedes being hindered that the Red Bull was unable to make the overtake.

Do you think Verstappen’s idea should be implemented at Zandvoort? Let us know in the comments.

  • Arnoud van Houwelingen says:

I saw more overtakes at the Tarzan corner this year due to the fact that the entry point of the DRS zone was before the Luyendijk corner this year. So i think you can overtake at Zandvoort but the DRS train makes it more difficult. Even in Monza it is difficult to overtake when you are in a DRS train.
If i can make a suggestion, They should also bank the corner before the last banked corner and have the DRS start from the first DRS zone all the way to the Tarzan corner 😉

  • I think the overtaking was fine this year.. We saw plenty of it in turn 1 (Tarzan) due to the longer DRS zone and cars better able to follow (as there was even some overtaking without DRS).. I do not think having more banking in turn 3 on the inside will do much because you’d still not get the slingshot effect you get when you run it higher.. But I’m also no circuit designer/engineer or F1 driver, so they’d probably know better if it’s a feasible option to create an overtaking spot.. I doubt Zandvoort will put any more money into changing the circuit again though..
