This classic footage from Mika Hakkinen’s 1998 McLaren is a true masterclass in how to lap the Hungaroring
Screaming V10 engine, driver working hard at the wheel, incredible speeds, bonkers commitment and a tight and twisty circuit – this is a pretty awesome onboard lap.
It’s just a shame vintage Martin Brundle is talking over it, disguising the incredible sound of Hakkinen’s McLaren MP4/13.
This is, of course, a lap of the older-spec Hungaroring, where the first corner arrived quicker and wasn’t as sharp, the back straight was shorter and was then followed by a series of fast turns.
Apart from that, though, the track hasn’t changed all that much – it remains just as bumpy, narrow and challenging to tackle.
So, with F1 back in action at the Hungarian GP this weekend, we thought it’d be the perfect excuse to share this Hakkinen onboard.
