WTF1’s Top 12 of 2012 – WTF1

WTF1’s Top 12 of 2012

It’s been a big year for WTF1, a brand new site, a store, interviews, we even made it on TV a couple of times but it’s still the same old site it used to be. Hey and the world didn’t end, so we can continue to ignore all the important news for as long as we’re around!

We decided to reflect on 2012 with our favourite posts of the year, so below is our top 12 of 2012.

12: HRT Secure Durex Sponsorship

We were first to break the news that HRT had signed a sponsorship with Durex and were releasing JLS-style condoms featuring Narain and Pedro. Of course, this was actually just our April Fool prank for the year. No one was ever going to believe it, so we just tried to make it as hilarious as possible.

Who knows, maybe if they had in fact signed this sponsorship deal, they’d have had the money to continue in F1.

11: Sebastian Vettel gives Ted Kravitz his WTF1 T-Shirt

Along with our brand new site we launched the WTF1 Store. There were some great designs but without doubt our favourite has to be the Ted Kravitz Appreciation T-Shirt, mainly thanks to its fifteen minutes of fame.

In the Sky Sports F1 pre-race show for the Indian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel presented Ted with his very own T-shirt, although he didn’t seem to like it very much, it certainly made us laugh!

10: Kimi Falling Over

Kimi Raikkonen was the source of much comedy this season, his team radio, getting lost and we haven’t even got to the bit where he fell over a gate. Kimi’s stumble was absolute gold for F1 Photoshoppers and they soon got to work on some classics. Even Lotus themselves got involved with this meme and shared some of the best Kimi Photoshops.

9: WTF1 Banner at the Monaco

We were absolutely speechless when WTF1 readers Nicolas and his brother William took a fan-made WTF1 banner to Monaco. They were at St. Devote (turn one) on the Friday but the banner managed to stick around for race day and everyone watching could bask in all its glory.

8: Ten Images You Won’t Believe Aren’t Photoshopped

We’ve featured a lot of Photoshops on WTF1, so decided to do something a little different. We put together ten images you wouldn’t believe aren’t Photoshopped including Kimi asleep, Alonso with a giant hat and even this photo of Mark Webber looking like he’s been hit in the face with a sonic boom.

7: Red Bull RB7 Papercraft

We love nothing more on WTF1 than insane fans doing something time consuming and crazy to show their love of F1. This took things to a whole new level, the most incredible papercraft model we’ve ever seen. This Red Bull RB7 papercraft was so highly detailed you could be confused for thinking Adrian Newey made it himself.

6: Evolution of the F1 Car Animation

F1 has changed a lot since the beginning but thanks to this stunning animation from Ruf Blacklock we can see just how the sport has evolved. Ruf put together an awesome video which shows a seemless transition from 1950-2012. It’s short but sweet.

5: Hamilton’s GQ Shoot Gets Photoshopped

Our favourite Photoshop post of the year. When Lewis Hamilton appeared in GQ magazine, we all knew he wasn’t going to get away with it without a few Photoshops but no one could have expected just how many there’d be. Later on in the year, Sebastian Vettel did his own GQ shoot and suffered the same fate, although not as extreme.

4: Karun Chandhok Interview

Something new to WTF1 this year was our first interview. We spoke to ex-F1 driver and now Endurance racer, Karun Chandhok who also appears to be a fan of our blog. We weren’t going to waste our chance with a racing driver by asking him PR friendly questions, we wanted to know what his favourite livery was, about his helmet and of course, which F1 beard he’d look best with.

3: High Five Fail in Austin

There’s been plenty of comedy moments this year but nothing quite like the failed high five by two American dudes after Lewis Hamilton overtook Sebastian Vettel for the lead in Austin, Texas. We laughed at the time and we’re still laughing now, luckily someone made a gif so we can watch it again and again and again and again and again….

2: F1 Inspired Shark Sculptures

Bizarre Formula One items is what WTF1 is all about and our favourite of them were these incredible shark sculptures. Not only do they look like F1 cars but they’re also painted in racing liveries. I’m sure you’ll agree that they look absolutely awesome.

1: Super Maldonado Kart

What else could it be really? Super Maldonado Kart was our WTF1 Video from the Australian Grand Prix, with Pastor Maldonado driving in his classic Mario Kart style. The video got thousands of hits on YouTube (before FOM blocked it), it found its way onto sites like Jalopnik and Gizmodo, had its own challenge game, merchandise and some of you even thought it inspired F1 Race Stars… but we’re not going to take credit for that… (Codemasters make the cheque payable to Tommy, thanks.)
